Prompting best practices
Be clear and specific about your intent
- ❌ “Tell me about AI.”
- ✅ “Summarize the impact of AI on digital marketing in 2025 in under 100 words.”
Provide context and constraints
- ❌ “Write a product description.”
- ✅ “Write a fun and engaging product description for a Gen Z audience about a new AI-powered coffee maker, in 3-4 sentences.”
Use iterative refinement (prompt stacking)
- ❌ (Asks once, gets a generic response, moves on.)
- ✅ “That response is too technical—can you simplify it for a general audience?”
Experiment with role-based prompts
- ❌ “Give me marketing advice.”
- ✅ “You are a social media strategist for a fashion brand. What are three AI-powered content strategies to increase engagement?”
Break complex tasks into step-by-step prompts
- ❌ “Write a full marketing plan for my startup.”
- ✅ “Step 1: Outline a marketing strategy for an AI-driven SaaS product. Once we finalize that, we’ll move to execution tactics.”
Include examples or references
- ❌ “Write a LinkedIn post about AI ethics.”
- ✅ “Write a LinkedIn post about AI ethics in the style of Seth Godin—concise, thought-provoking, and engaging.”
Use structured prompts for precision and open-ended prompts for creativity
- ❌ “Brainstorm some ad ideas.”
- ✅ “Generate five ad concepts for a luxury watch brand, each with a tagline and a target audience.”
Test and document successful prompts
- ❌ (Uses different prompts each time, getting inconsistent results.)
- ✅ (Saves high-performing prompts for reuse and refines them over time.)
