Hahn’s Manifesto of Responsible AI in Marketing and Business

Hahn’s AI Task Force adopted this manifesto November 15, 2023 from the Marketing AI Institute under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.

In an era shaped by technological advancements, our ethos revolves around fostering Responsible AI Principles. We advocate for the conscientious development, deployment, and operation of AI technologies. Our foundation rests on a human-centric approach, emphasizing the augmentation of professionals rather than autonomous AI systems.

Accountability remains pivotal, underscoring the necessity for human involvement in every decision-making process, ensuring that AI serves as an assistive tool. Moreover, our commitment extends beyond mere technology; we embrace the integral role of human creativity and ethical content creation, aiming to harness AI’s potential while upholding moral standards. With transparency, privacy, and continuous learning at our core, these principles guide our ethical stance in AI applications.

Responsible AI Principles

  1. We believe in the responsible design, development, deployment and operation of AI technologies.
  2. We believe in a human-centered approach to AI that empowers and augments professionals. AI technologies should be assistive, not autonomous.
  3. We believe that humans remain accountable for all decisions and actions, even when assisted by AI. The human must remain in the loop in all AI applications.
  4. We believe in the critical role of human knowledge, experience, emotion, and imagination in creativity, and we seek to explore and promote emerging career paths and opportunities for creative professionals.
  5. We believe in the power of language, images and videos to educate, influence, and affect change. We commit to never knowingly use generative AI technology to deceive; to produce content for the sole benefit of financial gain; or to spread falsehoods, misinformation, disinformation, or propaganda.
  6. We believe in understanding the limitations and dangers of AI, and considering those factors in all of our decisions and actions.
  7. We believe that transparency in data collection and AI usage is essential in order to maintain the trust of our audiences and stakeholders.
  8. We believe in personalization without invasion of privacy, including strict adherence to data privacy laws, mitigation of privacy risks for consumers, and following our moral compass when legal precedent lags behind AI innovation.
  9. We believe in intelligent automation without dehumanization, and the potential of AI to have profound benefits for humanity and society.
  10. We believe in an open approach to sharing our AI research, knowledge, ideas, experiences, and processes in order to advance the industry and society.
  11. We believe in the importance of upskilling and reskilling professionals, and using AI to build more fulfilling careers and lives.
  12. We believe in partnering with organizations and people who share our principles.

In adherence to these principles, we strive for a future where AI harmoniously integrates with human endeavors. Upholding transparency in data usage, respecting privacy, and maintaining ethical standards form the bedrock of our initiatives.

As we champion responsible AI, we recognize the profound potential for positive societal impact and the transformative power it holds. Collaborating with like-minded entities, nurturing human creativity, fostering educational opportunities, and sharing knowledge openly, we forge a path toward a future where AI augments human capabilities, enriching lives and industries while upholding ethical values. Join us as we navigate this landscape, fostering a symbiotic relationship between humanity and technology for a brighter, more responsible future.

Copywriting Guidance in the Age of AI

Em Dash Usage

We recommend avoiding em dashes in most client-facing materials, including emails, slide decks, and proposals. While traditionally accepted in editorial writing, em dashes are now a recognizable marker of AI-generated content:

  • Default to avoiding em dashes in client-facing materials like emails, decks, and proposals
  • Allow them in rare cases where emphasis or tone truly requires it
  • When editing AI-generated drafts, remove unnecessary em dashes to preserve human voice
  • If a client asks, AP Style is our cited authority.

Other Signs of AI-Generated Copy

Be aware of additional red flags that may suggest AI-generated or unpolished content:

  • Emojis or overly casual punctuation
  • Predictable or repetitive list structures
  • Flowery or overly balanced language without substance
  • Generic phrasing like “in today’s fast-paced world” or “now more than ever”

Our Copywriting Philosophy

AI tools can support ideation, but final copy must reflect human judgment, brand tone, and editorial intent. Writing should be clear, specific, and original.

AI may assist, but it does not author. Final copy must speak with a human voice.
